In the 20th Century, as more Westerners came to Nepal to climb famous mountains such as Mt. Everest, the legend of the Yeti (or Abominable Snowman) spread all over the world. Explorers came and photographed ape-like footprints in the snow and reports of seeing large, hairy unknown figures in the distance became the basis for what we now know as a Yeti. Although in recent years DNA samples taken from supposed Yeti have been found to contain Asian black and brown bear genes, the legend lives on.
