Both thin and thick pads are a punched pad with an embossed rubber, non-slip backing. They're constructed from 100% recycled fibers. Ideally, the thicker pads are good for cozy areas and thicker rugs, while thinner pads are good for high traffic areas and thin rugs - trying to avoid VRL (which is like VPL, but for rugs).  I like my rug pads to be slightly smaller than the rug - with a 2-3 border on all sides. But vintage rugs are irregular sizes, so it just needs to be close. All pads can be bought a little bigger and trimmed down - that's probably the best way to get it perfect.
