Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I am already getting a bit sad that October is almost over. I love everything about this season including the glorious scents of fall, which is why I love bringing them into my home. Today, I have a super easy simmer pot method that will get your house smelling fabulous all November! Then you can just change it up a bit around Christmas time and keep the loveliness going all holiday season. You will find recipes for these all over the internet and Pinterest. I have seen them for years now, and finally decided it was time to try it out for myself and sure enough…it worked like magic! There are many different combinations of items you could use to create your simmer pot, some with fancy spices, which I didn’t have on hand.  Here is what I did have though, and decided to use in my own version: apples (from my mom’s apple trees, oranges and orange peel, cinnamon sticks, and pods and nut shells from a “Harvest” blend of potpourri I had lying around). Some people add cloves, but again, I didn’t have any! Will have to get some and try that out. I cut the apples in half or chunks and peeled the oranges. Since, I don’t really like to waste food, I used apples and oranges that were on their way out and probably wouldn’t have tasted very good anyways. You can do whatever you want with these…there seem to be so many possibilities! Then everything went into the pot. I filled it with water almost covering everything but not quite and then put it on the back burner of my stove to simmer for a couple of hours. When the water reduced a couple of times, I just filled a measuring cup and added it back in. I wish I could transport the smell to you…soooo good! I have done it a couple of times now and love it! Even hours after I turn the stove off, I can still smell it all throughout my home. It reminds me of walking into a cute shop in the fall with lots of candles and scented goodness (which is one of my favorite things to to especially this time of year). So I am totally loving that I can bring that right into my own home. EASY AUTUMN SIMMER POT RECIPE {using what I had on hand} 2-3 apples cut in half 2 oranges and peel 3 cinnamon sticks handful of pods and nutshells from fall scented potpourri (optional: cloves – which I didn’t have on hand) METHOD: Add to pot and almost cover with water. Simmer on low for two to three hours adding water if needed. Do you have your own simmer pot recipes that you enjoy this time of year? Or do you have a great Christmas one? I know I will want to change it up a little then to bring all of the festive scents into our home come December! Till next time… ~Alice W.
